ALERT: SORNA Compliance Information

3-19-2012 National:

Courtesy Post from ATSA:

Hello,

I have some news with important implications for state and tribal decision making about SORNA implementation.

I've been told by personnel in the New York State Office of Sex Offender Management that even though NY made a final decision, and officially informed the SMART Office of this decision, that it will not ever implement the SORNA, they were able to get their 10 percent penalty Byrne/JAG monies reallocated to the state. The reallocation was for another kind of public notification program on sex offenders, but it was NOT to work towards implementation of SORNA requirements.

This is to say, New York State has been successful in an application for the reallocation of the Byrne/JAG funds (i.e. to receive their 10 percent penalty Byrne/JAG monies) by "furthering the effort" of SORNA by working on their version of community notification, but NOT by implementing or moving towards the SORNA model and demands.

Please feel free to spread this information far and wide amongst your networks.

If you'd like more information, you can contact folks in that office directly, specifically, Risa Sugarman, Director of the NY State Office of Sex Offender Management @ Risa.Sugarman@dcjs.ny.gov.

Regards to all of you,
Alisa Klien
