Quoting from The Detroit News article "Girl's suicide reveals a larger problem" by Rochelle Riley, Free Press Columnist:
"The case of a 14-year-old girl who had sex with an 18-year-old boy from her high school and later called it, alternately, rape or a wish to lose her virginity, has brought front and center the Michigan law that makes it illegal for teenagers to have sex.
That is the law. Repeat: It is illegal for young teenagers to have sex.
And third, it is time for bullying to stop in this country. Seriously. How many children have to kill themselves before we stop citing old law and create new?"
Ms. Riley said this is a case of "Social Homicide."
So, What is the potential for the next high school suicide (Social Homicide) due to bullying?
The 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, from the Center for Disease Control, reported these statistics:
6.3% of high school kids attempted suicide in 2009.The latest Census Bureau report (2006) of High School Enrollment shows 15,078,000 kids in high school.
46% of high school kids had sex at least once in their life.
13.8% of high schoolers had 4 or more sexual partners in their life.
Combining that into meaningful numbers:
949,914 High Schoolers Attempted Suicide in 2009.Is this "Potential" sufficient for Michigan and National Lawmakers, to address the issue? What is your opinion?
6,935,880 High Schoolers had sex at least once in their life.
2,080,000 High Schoolers had 4 or more sexual partners in their life.
